Overview

Tanzania is recognised for its cultural diversity, encompassing 120 distinct indigenous ethnic groups. Arusha is a key diplomatic centre, serving as the headquarters for the East African Community. The city, hosting international organisations, is a hub that embraces cultural diversity.

Volunteering in Tanzania offers the chance to experience its incredible sights, from the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro to the iconic Serengeti National Park. Witness wildlife migrations, explore the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater, and unwind in the vibrant spice markets and stunning beaches of Zanzibar.

Cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha serve up the perfect mix of modern vibes and cultural experiences. Whether you fancy safaris or immersing in the local scene, Tanzania promises a diverse and captivating experience.

You might experience a difference in the pace of life here compared to what you’re used to. If you’ve heard the phrase “Hakuna Matata,” which means “no worries” in Swahili, it might make sense why things move a bit slower here than in other places. It’s just part of the “Hakuna Matata” way of life. Another phrase you’ll hear often is “polepole” (slowly), which also reflects the relaxed pace of life in Tanzania.

Location

Situated in East Africa, Tanzania boasts diverse landscapes extending from the eastern coastline along the Indian Ocean to the Great Rift Valley in the west. Bordered to the south by Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika, and to the north by Kenya and Uganda, Tanzania shares its western borders with Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Located in northern Tanzania, Arusha (pronounced “AH-ROO-SHA”) is a gateway to adventure. Dubbed the “safari headquarters of East Africa,” Arusha is conveniently near Kilimanjaro National Park and famous safari spots, making it an ideal starting point for discovering Tanzania’s natural treasures.

Arusha serves as a base for both day trips and longer adventures. Embark on day trips to Arusha National Park to spot wildlife like giraffes and zebras, or visit a nearby Maasai village for a cultural immersion. For those seeking a challenge, hiking Mount Meru offers breathtaking views. For longer adventures, consider multi-day safaris to iconic destinations like the Serengeti National Park or the Ngorongoro Crater, or trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro.

For a longer getaway, head to Stone Town on Zanzibar Island. Known for its history and beaches, it’s a vibrant spot with maze-like streets and intricately carved wooden doors. Visit landmarks like the Sultan’s Palace and the Old Fort, and learn about Zanzibar’s past at the Zanzibar slave market. Don’t miss the markets for spices and crafts, and unwind on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches afterwards. Travel options from Arusha include flying, taking a train and ferry, taxi to Kilimanjaro then flying, or a bus and ferry. Flying is the fastest option, at about 1 hour and 19 minutes.

Arusha itself offers a blend of cultural experiences and outdoor adventures. Explore the vibrant Maasai markets, and visit Arusha National Park to spot diverse wildlife against the backdrop of Mount Meru.

In your free time, unwind with a cup of locally grown coffee and take in the sights and sounds of this dynamic city. Whether you’re seeking thrilling safaris or cultural immersion, Arusha has something to offer every traveller. With its warm hospitality and breathtaking scenery, it’s no wonder Arusha is a beloved destination in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro International Airport is located 45 km from Arusha.

Programs

We offer one volunteer opportunity in Tanzania. Our women’s empowerment volunteer program focuses on sustainable income through handcrafted work and eco-friendly fashion. The program enhances community lives through handicraft skills and entrepreneurship.

You’ll get involved in a range of activities, including graphic design, social media management, and learning weaving skills. We’ll teach you how to weave, from translating patterns to using hand-operated machines. Plus, you can assist with other business tasks too. No specialised skills required – just bring your passion for making a difference!

Project activities on this volunteer program may include:

  • Assisting with creating handcrafted items: These may include fashion items, paper craft, bead craft, wood work, weaving and more. You’ll have the opportunity to learn multiple crafting skills.
  • Supporting business activities: Support entrepreneurs with business activities related to their products, including but not limited to sales and marketing, social media, graphic design, product design and creative utilisation of leftover fabrics.
  • Assisting entrepreneurs with ad-hoc tasks: This may include occasional construction projects.
  • Skills development: Feel free to explore new areas where you may lack expertise. We encourage you to conduct online research to enhance your skills. You’ll then be able to apply your knowledge to your project activities, and share your learnings with the rest of the group.

As a volunteer in Tanzania, you’ll actively contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Firstly, by empowering local communities through sustainable income generation, you’ll support the goal of No Poverty (SDG 1). Through your involvement in various business activities and the promotion of entrepreneurship, you’ll contribute to Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). Your engagement in supporting local businesses and fostering community development aligns with the objectives of Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). Lastly, by promoting equality and inclusivity within the community, you’ll work towards the goal of Reduced Inequality (SDG 10), ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.
